Before the Session

Once you book, you’ll get a simple questionnaire. I’m not going to hand you a lot of homework but I want to make sure that your session is exactly what you’re dreaming up. We’ll talk through a location that fits your life: a favorite park in Cedar Falls, your backyard, somewhere with meaning to you. Familiar ground tends to make everyone relax faster than a “pretty” spot that feels staged.

A day or two before, I’ll check in with any last details, timing, weather, parking.

When We Meet Up

I show up early to scope out the location and figure out where the best backdrop options are, so we’re not wandering around searching once your family arrives. When you get there, we take a few minutes before any camera comes out. Kids especially need a minute to warm up to a stranger with equipment, that’s normal!

During the Session

Most of the session is built around prompted movement and real interaction, walking together, a tickle fight, parents talking quietly while kids run ahead. My job is to be close enough to catch what’s real, not to stage what looks good.

A few honest things about kids and sessions:

• Meltdowns happen. We work around them!
• I’ll get some genuine laughs alongside the classic “looking at camera” shots if you want both!
• If your toddler refuses every direction I give, that’s not a failed session. Some of the best images come from the five minutes nobody was posing!

We’ll move through two or three spots within the location, adjusting as light and energy change. A typical family session runs 30 minutes to an hour, enough time to get a full range of images without pushing anyone past their limit.

After the Session

You’re not left wondering for weeks. I’ll send a few sneak peeks within a couple of days, with your full gallery following after editing. Every image goes through the same consistent, true-to-life editing style, nothing over-processed, nothing that looks like a different family than the one who showed up.

What This Whole Approach Comes Down To

I’d rather document your family as you actually are than direct a performance of what a family “should” look like in photos. That means some imperfect, unposed, slightly chaotic moments make the cut, because those are usually the ones you’ll actually want to remember.
