If you’re looking for the best photo locations in Waverly, Iowa, I’ve got you covered.
As a Waverly, Iowa based photographer I’ve shot all over Iowa (and the Midwest) but some of my absolute favorite locations are right here in town. No need to drive far at all! We have locations that fit every style and vibe. Just beautiful, golden, real photos in the community you already know and love. Here are my favorite spots in Waverly for family, couples, maternity , senior sessions and more.
Red Cedar Park
Red Cedar Park is probably my most used location and for good reason. The open fields, the golden prairie grass and the way the late afternoon light makes everything glow right before sunset makes it one of the most naturally beautiful backdrops in Waverly. It’s also incredibly versatile, wide open spaces for running kids, quieter corners for intimate moments. It works beautifully in every season but spring and fall are especially stunning. If you’re not sure where to start for your session, Red Cedar Park is almost always my first suggestion.

Babcock Woods
If you want something a little more secluded and intimate Babcock Woods is for you. The tall trees create a natural canopy that filters light and adds privacy in the most beautiful way and the tall grass adds incredible texture and layers. This location is perfect for couples, seniors or families who want something that feels a little more tucked away and editorial. Fall is absolutely magical here when the leaves are turning, but honestly it photographs beautifully year round.

Downtown Waverly
Downtown Waverly is one of those locations that surprises people. The variety of building textures, brick facades and architectural details create so many different backdrops within just a few blocks. You can get ten completely different looking photos without moving very far at all. It’s a great option for seniors who want something more urban and editorial, for couples who want a mix of textures and character, or for anyone who wants their photos to feel a little different from the typical Iowa field session. The late afternoon light bouncing off the buildings is really special.

By the Cedar River
For golden hour sessions the Cedar River is hard to beat. The water reflects that warm late afternoon light in a way that just glows and the Iowa sunsets from the riverbank are some of the most beautiful (Iowa sunsets just hit different). This location works especially well for couples and families who want that warm, dreamy, golden look. There’s something about being near water at sunset that makes everyone relax and forget the camera is even there and that’s exactly when the best photos happen.

A note on timing
No matter which location you choose the single biggest factor in your photos is the light. I schedule all outdoor sessions around golden hour, that window about an hour before sunset when everything turns warm and glowing. Iowa golden hours are genuinely special and it’s worth planning your session around them.
