Family Session at Red Cedar Park in Waverly, Iowa

Family Session at Red Cedar Park in Waverly, Iowa

This family session with the Woodleys at Red Cedar Park in Waverly, Iowa this spring was so much fun. Not only were we able to sneak in our session on one of the only warmer nights we’ve had in weeks, but the sun was out and glowing!

Fisher brought his guitar and the kids had the best time running around the park and sneaking up on their parents with big hugs and tickles. One of my absolute favorite things to do during family sessions is let the kids run the show. While I always do my best to get that one photo of everyone looking and smiling, my favorite is to give the kids little “jobs” to do. I ask them to run up and surprise their parents with a hug, tickle them and really let them have as much fun as they can. This is how we get the best and most genuine smiles.

If you’re looking for a family photographer in Waverly, Iowa who makes the experience fun and stress free (and you’re kids will ask for more photos) keep reading. This session is everything I want every family session to feel like.

Why Red Cedar Park is One of My Favorite Spots in Waverly

As a Waverly, Iowa based photographer I’ve shot at a lot of locations around northeast Iowa, but Red Cedar Park is such a gorgeous gem right in town. The open fields, the golden prairie grass, the way the late afternoon light rolls across everything right before sunset.

It’s also incredibly versatile. Wide open spaces for running kids, quieter corners for intimate moments, and that signature Iowa sky that just goes on forever. Whether you have a family of three or a crew of seven, Red Cedar Park delivers.

The Woodleys brought all of this to life in the best possible way.

About the Woodley Family Session

Fisher and Kari Woodley are exactly the kind of people Waverly is lucky to have. They’re deeply involved and started up Waverly Christian School community, the kind of family that shows up for everyone around them and quietly makes everything better.

For their session, I asked them to do what they love to do. Fisher grabbed his guitar and the kids immediately started dancing around him. The golden light caught everything just right. I didn’t direct much, I just watched and photographed what was already happening.

That’s exactly how I approach every family session. No stiff poses. No “okay everyone look at the camera and smile.” Just prompts that give families a reason to interact naturally and then I get out of the way and let the real moments happen.

What to Expect from a Family Session in Waverly, Iowa

I know family photos can feel stressful, especially with little ones. So here’s what I want you to know before you book:

Your kids don’t have to cooperate. Seriously. Some of my favorite images come from the most chaotic sessions. Kids running, laughing, ignoring me completely, that’s the good stuff.

You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll give you prompts and reasons to move and interact. You won’t feel awkward because I won’t make it awkward.

Golden hour is magic. Sessions are scheduled around that warm late afternoon light that makes everything look like a painting. Iowa sunsets are genuinely something special.

You’ll get your sneak peek within 48 hours. Because waiting is the worst and you deserve to see your photos fast.
